Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is an empirically validated, structured approach to couples therapy. It is based on adult theories of attachment which emphasis an individuals’ need for emotional connectedness and responsiveness in intimate relationships. EFT addressed the fundamental need for connection in relationships and how each we respond when the fear of losing connection is threatened.

EFT is effective for many different relational issues, and also for different cultural groups. It has proven to be effective for issues such as communication and conflict resolution, betrayal and infidelity, re-building trust and for couples seeking separation and divorce.

The process of EFT has three overarching goals in the process of therapy:

  1. Assess and understand negative patterns in relationship and helping couples to de-escalate negative emotion

  2. Change relationship patterns and create new relational experiences, while healing past hurts and wounds

  3. Integrating new relational patterns and consolidate new learning
